Eh I've never really enjoyed the Tales games. But if you enjoy it that's good for you I guess.

my thoughts:

pros: great character roster, streamlined moves (now only 2 fighting styles), the krypt isnt 'blind' anymore (you know what you are buying), lots unlocked when you start (only 4 charaters remain), GREAT CAC mode (lol anime school girl), air combat is pretty cool, only one type of money now.

Cons: CRAPPY endings! ;_;, the kart racing isnt great (i loved the puzzle fighter and chess in MK:Dso much more), not a huge fan of konquest mode (MK:SM did a better job), i dont like the new fatality system.

overal, still a 9/10 for me.

kung lao still kicks ass with his Mantis/Shaolin Fist/Braodsword styles right?

and how many REGULAR fatalities per character?

bad news on both fronts: 2 styles per fighter now: fist and weapon.

kung lao has shaolin fist and broadsword.

BUT he has a kick ass expanded teleport special moveset now.

and fatalites: no specefic character fatalties! ;_;

its now a 'tree system'....you do things like punch, kick, rip off limbs, decapitate, and rip out organs one move imput at a time, and they are the same animations for everyone. the order depends on how you input them. i dont like it much.

That sucks, I prefer unique, gory fatalities. I've only played Shaolin Monks, so how does it compare? Is it better? Does it have the puzzle combat of Deception?

Tales of the Abyss: Is it like Symphonia? Better?

I consider all tales games better than Symphonia, so to answer your question, yes.

Not that I hate Symphonia or anything, just that it's the second most overrated game next to Final Fantasy VII.

I really don't see what's so overrated about ToS? Why do you think it is, I understand FF VII, but it's still like top 5 or 10 for me easily. I still haven't played Legendia, I heard it also has some great characters. Does this have the great stories and twists that Symphonia had?

People think that ToS is the FFVII of the Tales series.

I did enjoy ToS though. Definitly the best JRPG of this generation. I just enjoyed ToP more.

The main problem I had with Symphonia was the HORRIBLY cliched plot. When everything you expect to happen happens, that's a bad sign. The battle system kind of pissed me off, because of the fact that enemies could run up to you around other enemies and gang-rape you (This is fixed in Abyss by using Free Run). And most of the time, I ended up spamming one move (can't remember which one at the moment), a similar complaint I had with Star Ocean 3 (Side Kick owns ALL enemies).

Legendia had EXCELLENT character development, but they basically destroyed the 2D battle system; semi-auto is damn near unuseable (Though I tend to never use S-A anyway). That, the massive amount of pallet swapped enemies, and the crappy pace of the storyline (long linear dungeon, mass of story. long linear dungeon, mass of story, repeat until finished), made me not like it as much, though.

Destiny is still my favorite, not only because all Swordian characters could use techs AND spells, but because I never expected such a nice story. That, and it was the last Tales to NOT use the cooking system, a thing I LOATHE. Sure, throwing food in a bag is far less realistic, but it's much less annoying than finding bullshit recipes.

And the graphics whore in me would like to say that the series just doesn't look right in 3D. Sure, the environments are pretty, but nowhere near as nice as some of the 2D forests, and all the nice little random effects there were.

What did you think of Phantasia Phant?

And yes, ToS was really cliched. But, IMO, ToS pulled off those cliches very well, and even poked fun at it in a few cases. It wasn't trying for anything original; it was just taking what worked and doing a good job with it.

Yeah that, but there were a lot of good twists.
